On January 12, 2010 Haiti was hit with a catastrophic earthquake magnitude 7.0. The epicenter was near Leogane, a town 16 miles away from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. By January 24, there were at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater. An estimated 3 million people have been affected.
Two months after the earthquake, most of the dead bodies had been removed from the streets, though many still remained in the rubble. By, then many had moved into the tent cities while others too afraid that there will be another major aftershock lived in tents just outside of what was once their home. In two months time the city was still in chaos. Few had access to running water and sanitation was a problem at just about every tent city. As the rainy season approached it was unclear how the tent cities would survive heavy storms that are common during that period. Displaced and homeless, the Haitians still showed remarkable resolve and tenacity. They don’t know what tomorrow brings but somehow they are still filled with hope that out of the rubble will emerge a new Haiti stronger than what was there in the past.
